Health checkups for 12- to 13-year-olds (12-year-old girls and 13-year-old boys). Descriptive analysis and epidemiological findings

Government authorities sought to evaluate the implementation, at the onset of adolescence (12-year-old girls and 13-year-old boys), of a preventive health screening based on a personalized consultation with private practitioners. The purpose of this health consultation was to identify, at an early stage, any health and social issues that might arise as young adolescents develop. Indeed, while it is generally accepted that the majority of adolescents are doing well, adolescence is also the period of life when risky behaviors take hold (experimentation with drugs and addictive substances, behavioral disorders, eating disorders) and when people seek medical care the least. Under the auspices of the Interministerial Delegation for the Family, a pilot program for this consultation was implemented in the departments of Aisne, Gironde, and Yvelines during the 2006–2007 school year by the National Health Insurance, the Ministry of National Education, and the Regional Unions of Private Practitioners. The French Institute for Public Health Surveillance was responsible for the quantitative evaluation of the pilot program, a summary of which is presented in this report. (R.A.)
