Total incapacity for work among victims of violence in Seine-Saint-Denis, France, 2006
Introduction - There are few descriptive studies in France on incidents of violence and their medical consequences. This article presents incidents of violence reported by victims after filing a complaint with the police or gendarmerie in Seine-Saint-Denis. Methods - From January 1 to December 31, 2006, a systematic data collection was conducted regarding the characteristics of the victims and the violence, as well as the consequences of the violence (duration of total incapacity for work (ITT)). Results - A total of 9,831 victims of physical or psychological violence were treated. Among women, violence most often occurred at home; the perpetrator was most often the spouse or a stranger. Among men, violence most often occurred in public places or at the workplace; the perpetrator was most often a stranger. For intentional violence, the median duration of ITT was three days. ITT exceeded eight days in 939 cases (10%). Discussion-Conclusion - The results obtained are comparable to those observed in 2001 in the Hauts-de-Seine department. Only individuals who filed a complaint for having suffered violence are included in this study. The information presented should therefore be interpreted with caution before drawing any conclusions regarding situations of violence in France. (R.A.)
