Tuberculosis in the Nord Department: A Descriptive Analysis of Mandatory Reports in 2012
Following two consecutive cases of tuberculous meningitis in children living in the same municipality in Pas-de-Calais, the Nord-Pas-de-Calais Regional Health Agency (ARS) became concerned about a possible resurgence of tuberculosis in the region. An initial analysis of mandatory reporting data (DO) showed an increase limited to the Nord department in 2012, so the study was refocused on this department. The objective of this study was to describe the epidemiological characteristics of reported cases of active tuberculosis in order to identify potential determinants of this increase. The analysis covers mandatory reports of active tuberculosis in the Nord department received between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2012. An analysis by age group, country of birth, year of arrival in France for foreign patients, circumstances of diagnosis, and by periods (2001–2006, 2007–2011, and 2012) was conducted. The results show no increase in tuberculosis case reporting rates among those under 15 years of age between the 2001–2011 period and 2012. However, an overreporting was observed among those aged 20–34 during the months of March, April, and June 2012, although the epidemiological description of cases based on DO data does not allow for determining the cause. Overall, the observed increase could reflect greater awareness among reporting entities rather than an actual rise in the number of cases. It would be useful to conduct a completeness survey of tuberculosis DO data in 2013 to confirm this hypothesis. (R.A.)
