Public Health Surveillance in Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardy. Epidemiological Update, January 28, 2016.

Key Points

Epidemiological Situation of Chickenpox in Nord-Pas-de-Calais-PicardieIn Nord-Pas-de-Calais, activity at SOS Médecins and emergency departments for chickenpox remains exceptionally high for this time of year.In Picardie, SOS Médecins activity is also at a high level for this time of year, but at a more moderate level than in Nord-Pas-de-Calais.

Bronchiolitis SurveillanceIn Nord-Pas-de-Calais, all outpatient and hospital indicators confirm the sharp slowdown in the epidemic over the past few weeks. In Picardy, the rate of SOS Médecins consultations was slightly above the regional alert threshold.

Surveillance of influenza-like illnessesIn mainland France, activity for influenza-like illnesses is clearly on the rise. Brittany is the first region to be declared in an epidemic phase, while 9 other regions are considered to be in the pre-epidemic phase. In Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie, the rise in outpatient, hospital, and virological indicators leads to the classification of the broader region as being in the pre-epidemic phase. It should be noted that this increase primarily concerns the departments of Nord and Pas-de-Calais, and remains moderate in the departments of the former Picardy region.

Surveillance of severe influenza cases hospitalized in intensive care unitsIn mainland France, 32 severe influenza cases have been reported since the start of surveillance. These are predominantly confirmed cases of type A influenza. In Nord-Pas-de-Calais and Picardie, no new severe influenza cases were reported in week 03.

Surveillance of acute gastroenteritisIn mainland France, the epidemic threshold used by the Sentinelles network has been exceeded for the third consecutive week, confirming the nationwide gastroenteritis epidemic. In Nord-Pas-de-Calais, outpatient activity remains stable below the regional alert threshold. At the hospital level, activity is on the rise, while the number of isolated viruses remains stable. In Picardy, SOS Médecins activity remains close to the regional alert threshold, and hospital activity for gastroenteritis is rising sharply.

Monitoring of Carbon Monoxide Poisonings: In France and the Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie region, there has been an increase in the number of CO poisonings this week compared to previous weeks, likely due to the drop in temperatures. However, since the start of the heating season, the number of cases remains lower than those observed during previous seasons, both in France and in the Nord-Pas-de-Calais region.
