Epidemiological Situation of Dengue Fever in French Guiana. Update as of August 26, 2020.

Epidemiological Situation

Most of French Guiana has been in an epidemic phase for several weeks, including the Maroni, West Coast, Kourou, and Cayenne Island sectors. The Oyapock sector is experiencing localized outbreaks. The rest of the territory (interior and east coast) is in a phase of sporadic cases. The emergence of new dengue cases in French Guiana has slowed significantly in recent weeks, suggesting that the peak of the epidemic may have been reached at the regional level. However, trends in viral circulation show regional disparities:

  • in sharp decline in the Maroni sector

  • declining in the western coastal sector

  • on the rise in the Kourou sector

  • slowing in the Cayenne Island sector

  • a resurgence of cases in the Oyapock sector

  • a recent increase in the inland and eastern coastal sectors

Emergency room visits for dengue fever at various hospitals confirm the trends observed in the affected areas. Hospitalizations for dengue fever have been declining overall since May.
