Key Points

  • Among adults, the number of emergency department visits for mental health issues during the first five months of 2022 was approximately 6% lower than the 2018–2020 average for the same period.

  • The number of emergency room visits for suicidal ideation during the first five months of 2022 remained high and consistent with what was observed at the end of 2021.

  • Among children, the monthly number of emergency room visits for mental health issues remains similar to what was observed in 2021 and thus remains significantly higher than the figures for the 2018–2020 period.

  • The increase in the number of emergency room visits due to suicidal thoughts, observed in 2021, continues through the first five months of 2022 across all age groups starting at age 11

  • It is up 70% compared to 2021 figures and up 87% compared to 2018–2020 figures.

  • Among 11- to 17-year-olds, the increase in emergency room visits for suicidal thoughts also continues: a 72% increase compared to the 2018–2020 average; and a 52% increase for 2021.
