COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Grand Est Region, March 4, 2021
Key Points
In week 08-2021, the number of new cases remained stable (10,134 new cases compared to 10,210 in week 07-2021). The number of people tested decreased (181,856 people tested this week compared to 220,227 in week 07-2021). The incidence rate remained stable (185 new cases per 100,000 residents compared to 185 in week 07-2021) but remained below the national incidence rate (223 new cases per 100,000 residents). In week 08-2021, the positivity rate (5.6%) increased (4.6% in week 07-2021).
The epidemic situation remains concerning in week 08-2021, with viral circulation well above the threshold for active virus circulation (set at 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants). Viral circulation is high across all age groups, ranging from 78 per 100,000 among those aged 0–9 to 269 per 100,000 among those aged 20–29 and 259 per 100,000 among those aged 90 and older. Nearly two-thirds (60.1%) of new cases tested in week 08-2021 are under 50 years of age (29.1% are between 20 and 39 years old) and are therefore, in principle, at low risk of severe disease. In week 08-2021, viral circulation is on the rise in two departments in the region: the Ardennes (130.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and Aube (256.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). It remains stable in seven departments: Marne (174.5 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meurthe-et-Moselle (217.1 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meuse (132.7 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Moselle (287.2 cases per 100,000 inhabitants); Bas-Rhin (166 cases per 100,000 inhabitants); Haut-Rhin (106
cases per 100,000 inhabitants); and Vosges (107.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). It is declining in Haute-Marne (105.8 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The situation remains concerning in Moselle, as, in addition to having the highest incidence rate in the region, there is significant circulation of variants of interest. In seven departments, viral circulation is at levels similar to those observed in early December, if not lower.
