COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Grand Est Region, March 11, 2021
Key Points
In week 09-2021, the number of new cases rose slightly (10,324 new cases compared to 10,204 in week 08-2021). The number of people tested continued to decline (177,374 people in week 09-2021 compared to 182,244 in week 08-2021). The incidence rate rose slightly (187.3 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 185.1 in week 08-2021) and remains below the national incidence rate (220.1 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants). In week 09-2021, the positivity rate increased very slightly (5.8% compared to 5.6% in week 08-2021).
The epidemic situation remains concerning in week 09-2021, with viral circulation well above the threshold for active virus circulation (set at 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants). Viral circulation remains high across all age groups, ranging from 81 per 100,000 among those aged 0–9 to 266 per 100,000 among those aged 20–29 and 216 among those aged 90 and older. Nearly two-thirds (64.5%) of new cases tested in week 09-2021 are under 50 years old (31.4% are between 20 and 39 years old) and are therefore, in principle, at low risk of severe disease.
In week 09-2021, viral circulation increased in seven departments in the region: the Ardennes (146 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Aube (306 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Haute-Marne (138 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meuse (173 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Bas-Rhin (183 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Haut-Rhin (110 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Vosges (124 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). In the other departments, the incidence rate is declining: Marne (169), Meurthe-et-Moselle (206 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Moselle (253 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The situation is concerning in Aube: the incidence rate is skyrocketing and is now the highest in the region.
In seven departments, viral circulation is at levels similar to those observed in early December, if not lower.
