COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Grand Est Region, April 8, 2021

Key Points

In week 13 of 2021, the number of new cases continued to rise (17,549 new cases compared to 16,621 in week 12 of 2021). The number of people tested also increased (321,567 people in week 13 of 2021 compared to 299,775 in week 12 of 2021). The incidence rate continues to rise (318 new cases per 100,000 residents compared to 302 in week 12 of 2021) but remains below the national incidence rate (404 new cases per 100,000 residents). The positivity rate, meanwhile, has remained stable over the past 6 weeks (5.5%, unchanged from week 12 of 2021).

The epidemic situation is particularly concerning in week 13 of 2021, with viral circulation well above the threshold for active virus circulation (set at 50 new cases per 100,000 residents) and, moreover, now rising sharply. Viral circulation remains high across all age groups, ranging from 182 per 100,000 among those aged 80–89 to 432 per 100,000 among those aged 10–19. Two-thirds (68%) of new cases tested in week 13 of 2021 are under 50 years old (30% are between 20 and 39 years old) and are therefore, in principle, at low risk of severe disease.

In week 13 of 2021, viral circulation is increasing in most departments of the region: Marne (383 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meuse (377 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Ardennes (357 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Haute-Marne (348 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Vosges (336 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meurthe-et-Moselle (327 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Haut-Rhin (213 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and remains generally stable in the others: Aube (546 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Moselle (299 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and Bas-Rhin (279 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The situation is particularly concerning in the Marne and Meuse, where incidence rates are rising sharply, as well as in the Aube, where the incidence rate remains the highest in the region.
