COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Grand Est Region as of April 1, 2021

Key Points

  • In week 12 of 2021, the number of new cases continued to rise (16,480 new cases compared to 14,225 in week 11 of 2021). The number of people tested also increased (296,980 people in week 12 of 2021 compared to 251,214 in week 11 of 2021). The incidence rate continues to rise (299 new cases per 100,000 residents compared to 258 in week 11 of 2021) but remains below the national incidence rate (379 new cases per 100,000 residents). The positivity rate, meanwhile, has remained stable over the past 5 weeks (5.5% compared to 5.7% in week 11 of 2021).

  • The epidemic situation is particularly concerning in week 12 of 2021, with viral circulation well above the threshold for active virus circulation (set at 50 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants) and, moreover, now rising sharply. Viral circulation remains high across all age groups, ranging from 178 per 100,000 among those aged 80–89 to 416 per 100,000 among those aged 10–19. Two-thirds (68%) of new cases tested in week 12 of 2021 are under 50 years of age (29% are between 20 and 39 years old) and are therefore, in principle, at low risk of severe illness.

  • In week 12 of 2021, viral circulation is increasing in all departments of the region: Aube (544 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meuse (340 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Marne (324 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Haute-Marne (311 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Moselle (306 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Ardennes (303 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), Meurthe-et-Moselle (303 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the Vosges (301 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), the Bas-Rhin (274 cases per 100,000 inhabitants), and the Haut-Rhin (190 cases per 100,000 inhabitants). The situation is particularly concerning in the Vosges and Haute-Marne, where incidence rates are rising sharply, as well as in Aube, where the incidence rate remains the highest in the region.
