Health Monitoring in Brittany. Update as of July 20, 2021.

Key Points

COVID-19

Increase in the incidence rate and positivity rate calculated from PCR and antigen tests. The incidence rate rose from 29.2 per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 27 to 49.6 per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 28 (55.6 when adjusted for July 14). The positivity rate rose from 1.3% in Week 27 to 2.1% in Week 28. These indicators are on the rise across all departments, with a marked increase among those aged 15–34 and a more moderate increase among those aged 35–49. In departments 35 and 56, we also observe an increase in incidence rates among those aged 80 and older, linked to COVID clusters that occurred in nursing homes and hospitals. More than 80% of screenings identify the L452R variant, and this percentage is relatively consistent across the region. Many clusters associated with vacation destinations and private events have been identified in Brittany. Vaccination coverage stands at 62.9% for a single dose and 49.1% for a full course.

Bronchiolitis

There has been an upward trend in the number of diagnoses following emergency room visits among children under 2 years of age for several weeks. Over the past few weeks, the virology laboratories at the Rennes and Brest university hospitals have been detecting respiratory syncytial virus in respiratory specimens more frequently than is typically observed at this time of year.

Extreme heat, heat wave

Brittany has been under a green alert since the start of surveillance, through week 28. Activity is low, close to levels seen in previous years, excluding periods of extreme heat. The departments of Finistère and Morbihan were placed under a yellow heat wave alert from July 19 to 23 (week 29). The associated indicators will be presented in the next PE.
