Key Points

Infection with the novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), COVID-19

  • In S33, the number of new coronavirus cases has decreased, as has the number of tests performed, compared to S32. The number of hospitalizations following visits to the emergency room for suspected coronavirus remains stable.

  • As of August 17, 2020, 4,773 confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been diagnosed by RT-PCR in the region since the start of the epidemic, including 447 in Week 33, representing an 8.0% decrease in the number of confirmed cases compared to Week 32.

  • Virology: Low positivity rate stable at 1.5% in Week 33. More than 29,800 tests were performed in Week 33 in the region, representing a 7.9% decrease in the number of tests performed compared to Week 32.

  • SI-VIC: The majority of current hospitalizations are in Ille-et-Vilaine. The majority of deaths (cumulative figures as of August 19, 2020) occurred in Morbihan (35.8%) and Ille-et-Vilaine (33.2%).

  • ESMS: From March 1, 2020, through August 20, 483 facilities reported an outbreak, including 134 confirmed by one or more confirmed cases—residents or staff members—linked to COVID-19 in Brittany. These included 304 (63%) nursing homes (EHPAD) and 179 (37%) other medical-social facilities (EMS). The 483 reports corresponded to a total of 2,374 cases of COVID-19 (391 confirmed cases and 1,983 probable cases) among residents, of whom 261 were hospitalized, 90 died in the facilities, and 61 died in the hospital. In the 134 facilities with a confirmed case, 72 deaths occurred within the facility and 52 in the hospital.

  • Oscour: In Week 33, 119 emergency department visits for suspected COVID-19 were reported by the Oscour® network, representing 0.8% of coded activity. Of these visits, 18.5% were reported among those aged 65 and older, 18.5% among those aged 45–64, 44.5% among those aged 15–44, and 18.5% among those under 15. In week 34 (partial data), as of August 18, 2020, Breton emergency departments reported 8 visits for suspected COVID-19, representing 0.4% of total coded activity. From early March through August 18, 2020, a total of 6,232 visits for suspected coronavirus were recorded.

  • SOS Médecins: In week 33, the Breton SOS Médecins associations reported 83 cases of suspected COVID-19, representing 2.7% of total coded activity. Of these cases, 4.8% were reported among those aged 65 and older, 19.3% among those aged 45–64, 67.5% among those aged 15–44, and 8.4% among those under 15. In week 34 (partial data), as of August 18, 2020, the SOS Médecins associations in Brittany reported 24 cases of suspected COVID-19, representing 3.4% of total coded activity. From early March through August 18, 2020, a total of 2,263 SOS Médecins cases involving suspected coronavirus were recorded.
