Vaccination Coverage Among Residents and Staff in Nursing Homes in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. 2011 Survey Report
Objective. After assessing pneumococcal and tetanus vaccination coverage among residents of long-term care facilities during the winter of 2008–2009, a study re-measured these vaccination coverage rates during the winter of 2009–2010, expanding the scope to include seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccination coverage among residents and staff, as well as pertussis vaccination coverage among staff. Method. A cross-sectional study using a representative sample (n=450) selected through a two-stage survey was conducted from April to August 2010. Vaccination data were collected from medical records. Staff vaccination coverage rates were obtained in aggregate from the facilities. Results. Pneumococcal vaccination coverage among all residents and at-risk residents was 30%, 95% CI [20.8–41.4], and 50%, 95% CI not calculable, respectively, and had doubled between 2009 and 2010. Tetanus vaccination coverage among residents was 31.3%, 95% CI [20.9–44.0], which was not different from 2009. Seasonal and pandemic influenza vaccination coverage among residents was 74% (95% CI [63.4–81.5]) and 22% (95% CI [14.7–31.4]), respectively. Vaccination coverage among staff at these facilities was 30% (95% CI [22.0–37.8]) for seasonal influenza, 8% (95% CI [4.9 –10.6] for pandemic influenza, and 23% with a 95% CI of [7.4–38.7] for pertussis. Discussion and Conclusion. This study highlights insufficient vaccination coverage among both residents and staff in long-term care facilities in Burgundy and Franche-Comté. (R.A.)
