Health Monitoring in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. Update as of November 9, 2023.

Key points

Bronchiolitis

  • The number of bronchiolitis cases among children under 2 continues to rise in emergency departments (10% vs. 8% in Week 1).

  • SOS Médecins activity remains relatively stable (7% for the second consecutive week).

  • The trend is similar to the 2021–2022 epidemic, and activity levels are lower than in the two previous seasons.

Influenza

  • Flu-related activity (all ages) among SOS Médecins associations and emergency departments is on the rise. Activity rates are higher than in the two previous seasons.

  • Among the 154 episodes of acute respiratory infections (ARI) occurring in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) between weeks 20 and 44, none were attributed exclusively to influenza.

Acute Gastroenteritis

  • Activity (all ages) at SOS Médecins clinics is low and falls within the range observed during the 2022–2023 season.

  • Activity (all ages) in emergency departments over the past few weeks remains below the levels observed during the previous season and the 2021-2022 season.

COVID-19

  • The rate of confirmed cases in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté is decreasing: it fell from 43.4 in Week 43 to 33.1 per 100,000 inhabitants in Week 44 during the school break. The percentage of activity for suspected COVID-19 cases at SOS Médecins clinics decreased slightly (3.3% vs. 3.8% in Week 1). The rate of emergency department visits is also decreasing and remains low (1.3% vs. 1.7% in Week 1) (Figure 8 and map below). The proportion of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit is decreasing (40.0% vs. 52.0% in Week 1) and primarily concerns those aged 65 and older (90.1%).

  • In long-term care facilities (LTCFs), surveillance of individual COVID-19 cases has been suspended since June 22, 2023, replaced by surveillance of clustered cases of acute respiratory infection (ARI). Between weeks 20 and 44, 154 outbreaks were reported in these facilities (including more than a dozen per week since late August (Week 35)), 132 (86%) of which were attributable exclusively to COVID-19. A decrease in the number of reports has been observed since Week 42.

Chikungunya, dengue, and Zika

  • In Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, 38 imported cases of dengue were biologically confirmed, including 35 in endemic departments. As observed at the national level, half of the cases (53%, 20 cases) were returning from the French West Indies (Martinique and Guadeloupe). Two imported cases of chikungunya were also biologically confirmed, one of which was in an endemic department. They had returned from India.
