Enterovirus Infections as of June 12, 2013

In France, enterovirus surveillance has been conducted by a network of volunteer laboratories since 2000 (Enterovirus Surveillance Network, RSE, coordinated by the CNR and the InVS). Since 2013, activity data has been available on a dedicated website hosted by the CNR in Clermont-Ferrand: http://cnr.chu-clermontferrand.fr.

The main enteroviruses identified in France in recent years are echovirus E-30 (particularly in 2005 and 2009), E6 (particularly in 2011), and coxsackievirus. In addition, the InVS’s SurSaUD network monitors emergency department visits for a diagnosis of enterovirus meningitis. Diagnoses of human enterovirus infection tend to increase in May, June, and July.

Currently, a very limited increase in enterovirus-related infections is being observed in France, although echovirus type 30 is circulating, similar to the strains responsible for recent meningitis outbreaks.
