Headlines - Emergence of a new norovirus variant
The national gastroenteritis surveillance system has shown a higher increase in norovirus activity compared to the same period in 2011–2012. This increase, observed in France in late 2012, has also been noted in various countries (Japan, England, Wales, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, etc.). Initial molecular data available via NoroNet suggest that this increase may be linked to the emergence of a new norovirus variant of genotype GII.4, also detected by the virology laboratory at the Dijon University Hospital (CNR for Enteric Viruses). It is reported in the literature that the emergence of GII.4 variants is associated with earlier outbreaks accompanied by a higher number of hospitalizations and deaths, due to a loss of herd immunity in the population. With the first signs pointing to a severe norovirus season, healthcare facilities must prepare for the arrival of gastroenteritis outbreaks by implementing active surveillance, reporting the first case to the relevant Regional Health Agency (ARS) immediately, and promptly implementing strict hygiene and isolation measures to minimize the impact of outbreaks.
