Influenza Surveillance in Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes. Update as of February 2, 2017.
Key Points
Week 7 of the outbreak – continued slow decline
Surveillance indicators have stabilized or continued to decline in primary care and emergency departments over the past week (2017-04). The impact remains particularly pronounced among people aged 65 and older, due to the near-exclusive circulation of the A(H3N2) virus.
The increase in mortality from all causes that began in the region in week 2016-51 continued and intensified through week 2017-01 (+42% across all age groups). Although declining, the excess mortality observed in week 02 in the region remains very high (+37% across all ages) (unconsolidated data). Excess mortality from all causes is estimated at approximately 1,900 deaths between weeks 2016-49 and 2017-2 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It primarily affects people aged 65 and older. It appears to be at least partly linked to the flu epidemic, although it is not yet possible to quantify the proportion attributable to it at this stage.
