Health Monitoring in Auvergne and Rhône-Alpes. Update as of December 16, 2016.
Key Points
Fine Particulate Matter PollutionSince November 30, an episode of air pollution caused by fine particulate matter has been underway, primarily affecting the former Rhône-Alpes region. Several areas are affected, particularly urban areas, the Rhône Valley, and the Alpine valleys. In this context, prefectural measures have been activated in the affected regions to disseminate health recommendations and implement measures aimed at reducing pollutant emissions in the various contributing sectors.During this type of winter episode, heating—and primarily individual wood heating—is the main contributor to fine particulate emissions. Transportation and industry are the two other major contributors to particulate emissions. The distribution of sources varies by region. In the Arve Valley, wood heating accounts for the vast majority of emissions. This pollution episode serves as a reminder that air pollution is a major public health issue. However, short-term impacts represent only a small fraction of the overall impact, which is primarily caused by chronic pollution linked to the finest particles (PM2.5) and its long-term effects. A recent assessment by Santé publique France of the health impact of exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) shows that it causes approximately 48,000 premature deaths each year.
Flu: Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region enters pre-epidemic phase Analysis of surveillance indicators shows a sharp increase in the circulation of the influenza virus over the past week, such that the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region has been placed in the pre-epidemic phase. The predominant circulating virus detected over the past four weeks in the region is the AH3N2 virus. In mainland France, most regions are also in the pre-epidemic phase, while the Île-de-France and Brittany regions are in the epidemic phase.
Winter Health: Recommendations from the ARS Extreme cold, like heat waves, poses a health risk to everyone, particularly the most vulnerable. The Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Regional Health Agency (ARS) has posted on its website the preventive measures to take and the healthcare services available to help you enjoy the winter season. In particular, you will find recommendations on how to protect yourself from seasonal viruses, carbon monoxide poisoning, and winter sports accidents.
