Cancer Survival Rates in France’s Overseas Departments and Regions. 2008–2018. Materials and Methods

This study focuses on the follow-up of cancer survivors residing in the overseas departments and regions (DROM) of Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Réunion. Ten cancer sites are studied: lip-mouth-pharynx, esophagus, stomach, "colon and rectum," lung, breast, cervix, uterine body, prostate, and "multiple myeloma and plasmacytoma." The study covers the diagnosis period from 2008 to 2015 and is limited to individuals aged 15 or older at the time of diagnosis. The vital status of individuals was updated as of June 30, 2018, by the registries using a standardized procedure. This study is a breakdown by DROM (Overseas Departments and Regions) and by department of Part 1 of the study “Survival of People with Cancer in Metropolitan France,” which covered the period 2010–2015. The method relies on modeling excess mortality rates to estimate net survival, as in the very first study on cancer survival published in 2007. However, the models used have been significantly modified and improved and now rely on penalized multidimensional splines to model excess mortality rates; these models were developed within the Biostatistics-Bioinformatics Department of the Hospices Civils de Lyon (HCL). It should be noted that the study of national trends in incidence and mortality also uses penalized multidimensional splines, but within the framework of Poisson models. The data come from the cancer registries of Guadeloupe, Martinique, and Réunion. They are coded according to the International Classification of Diseases in Oncology, 3rd Revision (ICD-O3). The study covers incident cases diagnosed between January 1, 2008, and December 31, 2015, aged 15 years or older at diagnosis, with follow-up through June 30, 2018. The study covers ten cancer sites, presented in Table 2. These definitions are consistent with those used in cancer survival and incidence studies in mainland France.
