Public Health Surveillance in the Caribbean - Special Epidemiological Update on Hurricanes Irma and Maria, October 10, 2017.
Epidemiological Summary
In Saint Martin, activity in the emergency departments at Fleming Hospital and health clinics has decreased compared to the previous week (70 visits/day at the hospital and 45 visits/day at the clinics). Consultations for somatic and traumatic conditions remain stable compared to the previous week, with two out of ten consultations island-wide. Gastrointestinal symptoms remain a minority, with no signs of severity. Psychological disorders account for 4% of all consultations across all facilities since IRMA.
In Saint-Barthélemy, activity is stable with about twenty visits observed daily. Over the past week, somatic trauma consultations accounted for nearly half of all consultations, a number higher than what was observed the previous week. Infectious gastrointestinal syndromes remain rare. No significant public health events have been reported. There are no public health alerts at this time.
In Guadeloupe, no epidemics are currently active. An increase in the number of emergency room visits for suspected leptospirosis has been observed in hospitals. This is expected given the seasonal resurgence of this disease.
In Martinique, no epidemic is currently active. No increase in routinely monitored epidemiological indicators has been recorded since Hurricane Maria struck Martinique. A potential delayed health impact should be monitored.
The medical and psychological assessment is currently being compiled and consolidated. To date, available information indicates significant activity by the CUMP teams: 275 calls handled and 884 field interventions.
