Key Points
According to data from the 2014 DOM Health Barometer, daily smoking among 18- to 75-year-olds was 16%, and daily or occasional smoking was 19%, with a higher prevalence among men. These data show significantly lower rates of daily or occasional smoking in Martinique compared to the average of 31.9% in metropolitan France.
The estimated number of daily smokers in Martinique is 30,000; the variables associated with smoking are gender and age, but neither income nor educational attainment are associated with smoking status.
According to the Escapad survey (OFDT), daily smoking among 17-year-olds was 15% in Martinique versus 25% nationally.
The proportion of people who had ever tried e-cigarettes was 9% in 2014 (33% in metropolitan France), and 2% of people reported vaping daily.
In Martinique, both women and men are significantly less likely to develop lung cancer than in mainland France, and they also die from it less frequently. Similarly, mortality from the main diseases associated with tobacco use (lung cancer, ischemic heart disease, and COPD) is significantly lower than in mainland France.
