COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy as of November 20, 2020
Key points
Guadeloupe
All epidemiological surveillance indicators for COVID-19 have been declining since the epidemic peak observed in mid-September. This decline has continued over the past week. Viral transmission within the population is decreasing. Since the start of the second wave in mid-August (2020-34), incidence and positivity rates fell below alert thresholds for the first time last week (2020-46), with rates of 34 cases per 100,000 inhabitants and 8.1%, respectively. The incidence rate among those aged 65 and older was 30 per 100,000 inhabitants.
In primary care and hospital settings, the number of consultations for acute respiratory infections and the number of emergency department visits decreased in week 46 compared to the previous week. The number of deaths occurring in hospitals and the number of new admissions to intensive care units, meanwhile, have stabilized. As part of cluster monitoring, a new cluster has been reported. At the same time, the effective reproduction number** (Reff), which describes the transmission of the virus among people in the region, is decreasing. As of November 20, the Reff, calculated over a 7-day rolling period based on laboratory data, is estimated at 0.64 [0.53–0.77] and is therefore significantly below 1.
Saint Martin
Epidemiological surveillance indicators have fluctuated over the past few weeks but have shown a trend toward stabilization since mid-September (week 37). The virus is still actively circulating in the territory. The positivity rate has averaged 15% over the past three weeks. The incidence rate decreased slightly in week 46 (95 per 100,000 inhabitants compared to 123 per 100,000 inhabitants in week 45). In community care and hospital settings, indicators have been declining over the past week (2020-46).
Saint-Barthélemy
Epidemiological surveillance indicators show an upward trend over the past week. Viral circulation appears to be accelerating, and the situation must be monitored closely. Over the past week (2020-46), the number of cases doubled (24 cases versus 11 in 2020-45), as did the positivity rate (6.7% in 2020-46 versus 3.1% in 2020-45) and the incidence rate (245 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020-46 versus 112 per 100,000 inhabitants in 2020-45). Given the small size of the population, the incidence rate is rapidly exceeding the vigilance or alert thresholds.
