COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy as of May 21, 2021
Key points
Guadeloupe
The peak of the third wave was reached in mid-April (week 2021-16), but hospital pressure persists, with a significant number of patients hospitalized across all departments and in intensive care. Although the incidence rate has been declining for three weeks due to reduced testing, it remained well above the alert threshold. The number of emergency room visits and new admissions (across all departments) remained stable compared to the previous week. The variant of concern (VOC) 20I/50Y.V1 is actively circulating in the archipelago (>90% of screened RT-PCR tests). Sporadic cases (imported cases) of the 20A/452R variant (VOC, B1.617) as well as sporadic cases (local cases) of the variant of interest 20A/E484K (VOI, B1.525, Nigeria/US) were reported in weeks 2021-11 and 2021-12.
Saint Barthélemy
The increase in virological surveillance indicators recorded in week 2021-18 did not continue into week 2021-19. In fact, incidence and positivity rates were slightly lower compared to the previous week, with testing rates remaining stable. In hospitals, no Covid-19 activity was recorded in week 2021-19.
Saint Martin
Virological surveillance indicators—specifically positivity and incidence rates—remained stable compared to the previous week despite an increase in testing. Emergency department activity and new hospital admissions also remained stable. One new death was recorded in week 2021-19.
