COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy as of August 19, 2021
Key points
Guadeloupe
Since mid-July (2021-28), Guadeloupe has been facing a fourth wave of SARS-CoV-2, which has reached a very high level over the past three weeks—unprecedented to date. Last week, the epidemiological situation regarding COVID-19 continued to deteriorate, with all surveillance indicators continuing to rise. The 20–29 and 30–39 age groups were particularly affected. Excess mortality, across all ages and causes of death, has been recorded since week 2021-31. In hospitals, the situation was critical, with an extremely high number of new hospitalizations across all departments and in intensive care. The R-value calculated from SI-DEP data for samples collected between August 8 and 14, 2021, was 1.23 [1.21–1.26], significantly higher than 1.
Saint Martin
In Saint Martin, circulation of the SARS-CoV-2 virus has been at a high level since mid-April (week 2021-15). However, over the past three weeks, the epidemiological situation has been deteriorating. In week 2021-32, virological indicators—specifically incidence and testing rates—were still rising, while the positivity rate remained stable but was nearing the alert threshold. The 15–44 age group was primarily affected. In hospitals, an increase in the number of new hospitalizations across all departments was observed.
Saint-Barthélemy
In week 2021-32, the epidemiological situation was relatively stable amid a decline in testing. However, an upward trend in hospital admissions was observed. The 15–44 age group was primarily affected.
