COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for Guadeloupe, Saint Martin, and Saint Barthélemy as of August 14, 2020

Key Points

Since late July, monitoring indicators and epidemic pressure indicators have shown a resurgence of viral circulation across all our territories:

  • Incidence rates have exceeded the alert threshold (10 per 100,000 inhabitants) for two consecutive weeks (July 27 to August 9) in all three territories;

  • Positivity rates remain below the alert threshold (5%) but have been rising for two consecutive weeks, reaching 2% in Guadeloupe and 3.5% in Saint Martin.

  • Consultations with general practitioners for acute respiratory infections (ARI) have increased over the past week compared to previous weeks, and more markedly in Saint Martin.

  • The number of positive cases identified through contact tracing of individuals who tested positive has been rising for several weeks. Secondary transmission chains and clusters (groups of cases) have recently been identified in Guadeloupe and Saint Martin. The clusters are largely linked to gatherings of people at private events. Nearly all cases from these clusters were locally transmitted (autochthonous cases).

  • Young adults aged 20 to 30 are currently the group most affected by this resurgence of viral transmission in Guadeloupe.

This upward trend is confirmed at the start of this week (August 10–13), with positivity and incidence rates continuing to rise in conjunction with the implementation of mass testing campaigns in the general population, combined with “non-targeted” campaigns organized for people returning from travel and focused on detecting clusters. Local transmission is becoming established across all our territories.
