Key Points

Extreme Heat, Heat Wave 

• The second heatwave of the summer in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region lasted from July 5 to 22. All departments in the region were affected.

Drowning 

• The first national report on drowning surveillance for the period from May 1 to July 15 was published by Santé publique France. In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, the total number of drownings (n=152) is down compared to 2025 (n=182), unlike in most other regions of France. However, the number and proportion of drownings resulting in death are on the rise (n=29, or 19%, in 2026 vs. n=20, or 11%, in 2025—an increase of 8 percentage points in the PACA region).

Dengue, Chikungunya, and Zika

• The first locally acquired human case was detected in the region, in the Bouches-du-Rhône department. Several cases in horses were diagnosed in the same department.

West Nile virus infections

• Since the start of surveillance (May 1), no locally acquired human cases have been
  detected in the region. Only one equine case has been diagnosed in Bouches-du-Rhône
  . The only human case was recorded in Occitanie, in the Pyrénées-Orientales
  .

Reportable Diseases

• In the Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur (PACA) region, 31 reports were recorded in June 2026, including 16 cases
  of Legionnaires’ disease, 8 cases of hepatitis A, 3 cases of invasive meningococcal disease, 3
  cases of measles, and one outbreak of foodborne illness.
