Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of April 23, 2026.

Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue activity has been low over the past two weeks. An increase in emergency department visits for dengue has been observed in S16 at CHOG, likely linked to the ongoing chikungunya outbreak in the area.

Chikungunya

  • Since the detection of the first confirmed case of chikungunya (S2026-04), 143 cases have been confirmed in French Guiana, including 115 in the West Coast sector (80%). A marked increase in confirmed cases was observed there in week 16, leading to the declaration of an epidemic in this sector. The Cayenne Island, Maroni, and Savanes sectors are in the sporadic transmission phase, while the Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock sectors remain in the epidemiological surveillance phase.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was low and stable over the past two weeks, with 7 malaria episodes recorded (3 in S15 and 4 in S16) compared to a total of 6 in S13 and S14. These 7 cases were caused by P. vivax, with no relapses. Since the beginning of the year, there has been a 63% increase in the number of malaria cases compared to the same period in 2025. Most infections occurred in gold mining areas in the Savanes sector. In total, 96 cases of malaria have been recorded since the beginning of the year, including 43 in January, 26 in February, 16 in March, and 11 in April.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • Over the past two weeks, bronchiolitis activity has been on the rise in French Guiana.
  • Activity related to influenza and SARS-CoV-2 was low.

Diarrhea

  • Diarrhea-related activity was on the rise and at a high level, particularly in the emergency departments of the three CHU sites.
