Through their research, expert analysis, and/or scientific and technical assessment activities, these eight public institutions share a common goal: to provide a better understanding of risks, as well as the means to prevent and reduce them. They also share the conviction that this goal must address the growing concern among citizens—who are anxious about health and environmental risks—to play an active role in understanding and assessing risks. By adopting this charter on Friday, November 27, 2020, they are renewing, in a shared spirit of shared values, their commitment to a process of openness and transparency toward society in the service of public debate and decision-making.
A strengthened and regular dialogue is one of the essential pillars of public trust in research and scientific expertise. Adopted by several public institutions in 2008, the Charter for Engagement with Society is now being expanded to include new signatories: Ifremer and, as part of their respective reorganizations, INRAE and Gustave Eiffel University. Committed to missions of public interest, the eight signatory institutions share the same values of independence and transparency, as well as the scientific quality of their work. These values are grounded in the same standards of competence, collaboration, and impartiality.
By signing this charter, they confirm their commitment to continuing the process of openness and enriching their work through enhanced dialogue with society via three commitments:
Supporting members of society in acquiring skills.
Sharing available scientific knowledge.
Increasing the transparency of their work.
To this end, each institution commits to implementing specific, sustainable measures to foster a fruitful dialogue with society through three shared objectives:
Strengthen the capacity of staff and students to engage in dialogue with society.
Identify and mobilize the resources necessary for societal engagement.
Develop management tools and publicly report on the initiative.
United around this charter of openness to society, the signatory members share best practices and feedback, and align their actions toward a common goal: to enhance the quality of their contributions to public policy and to society.
