Eating disorders: one in four teenagers is affected.

Eating disorders primarily include anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. Anorexia affects 0.9% of women, and bulimia affects 1.5%. However, in adolescence, milder forms of these disorders affect one in four teenage girls and one in five teenage boys. They typically emerge after puberty, between the ages of 14 and 18 for anorexia, but only half of those affected receive treatment for these disorders, even though 5% of people with anorexia nervosa die from the condition in the long term. Epidemiologists emphasize the urgency and necessity of early detection. They also stress that recovery can occur after a long course of the illness.
