Santé publique France focuses in particular on four areas of sexual health: sexually transmitted infections, including HIV; contraception; combating discrimination; and violence.
In conjunction with Sexual Health Week 2026, which will take place from June 1 to 7, 2026, Santé publique France is relaunching its prevention campaign, which addresses the topics of contraception, STIs, consent, and sexual health issues. The goal of this campaign, along with the tools provided, is to give the entire population access to reliable information so they can make informed and responsible decisions about their sexual health. The campaign posters were displayed from May 18 to 24 and will be shared digitally from June 1 to 28, 2026.
In 2024, approximately 5,100 people learned they were HIV-positive; this number appears to be stabilizing following the increase observed between 2020 and 2023. The most common modes of transmission among those diagnosed in 2024 were heterosexual intercourse (53%), followed by sex between men (42%). The HIV epidemic remains marked by a particularly concerning situation in French Guiana, and to a lesser extent in Mayotte, the French West Indies, and the Île-de-France region. Furthermore, the number of HIV-positive diagnoses among young people aged 15 to 24 increased by 41% between 2014 and 2023, while it decreased by 15% among adults aged 25 to 49.
Between 2022 and 2024, the incidence rates of STI diagnoses continued to rise. In 2024, approximately 61,100 people were diagnosed with Chlamydia trachomatis infection, 25,800 with gonorrhea, and 6,500 with syphilis, according to data from the National Health Insurance.
While STI screening has increased since 2014, particularly among young people, this age group remains particularly vulnerable.
In 2025, smallpox B (mpox) continued to circulate at low levels in France, primarily affecting men, with infections often linked to sexual contact between male partners. From January 1 to March 31, 2026, 67 cases of smallpox B (mpox) were reported, including 3 without laboratory confirmation. Since the beginning of 2026, an increase in mandatory reports of clade Ib cases has been observed in France. This strain now accounts for the majority of both locally acquired and imported cases identified in France.
To interrupt the transmission chains of these STIs, it is essential to strengthen prevention and screening efforts, tailoring them to the specific characteristics of the populations and regions most at risk.
