Asthma Health Monitoring - Back-to-School 2019. Weekly Update for September 17, 2019.

In week 37 (September 9–15, 2019),

  • nationwide, during the second week of school, there was a sharp increase in emergency room visits and calls to SOS Médecins for asthma compared to the previous week (up 170%, or 1,434 visits, and up 158%, or 330 cases, respectively), and the proportion of hospitalizations following an asthma-related visit rose from 27% to 30%. The shares of activity are 3.3% and 2.7%, respectively, slightly lower than those observed in the previous two years.

  • In the Indian Ocean, for the fourth week of school, emergency room visits for asthma among children are down compared to week 36 and account for 5.7% of total activity. These figures are comparable to those observed during the two previous school years. The proportion of hospitalizations following a visit has stabilized at 21%.
