Distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in genital lesions in France. EDiTH Studies

Here we present a summary of the results from the recently published EDiTH studies, which analyze the distribution of human papillomavirus (HPV) genotypes in invasive cancers, high-grade intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN2/3) and low-grade cervical lesions (LSIL), as well as in external genital warts (EGW) in France. Each of these studies included approximately 400 to 500 samples, with an overall HPV prevalence of nearly 98%. In invasive cancers and CIN2/3, HPV 16 was the most prevalent (73% and 62%, respectively), followed by HPV 18 (19%) for cancers and HPV 31 (15%) for CIN2/3. In LSILs, HPV 66 (25%) and HPV 16 (21%) were the most common, whereas in CAEs, HPV 6 (68%) and HPV 11 (16%) were the most frequently identified. Genotypes 16 and 18 were primarily observed in cancers (82%) and in precursor lesions (64% in CIN2/3 and 28% in LSIL), whereas genotypes 6 and 11 were mainly associated with condylomas (83%). In France, assuming a hypothetical vaccination coverage of 100%, a quadrivalent vaccine targeting HPV 6, 11, 16, and 18 could prevent 71% to 82% of invasive cancers, 45% to 64% of CIN2/3, 14% to 34% of LSIL, and 63% to 88% of genital warts.
