Prevalence and factors associated with Chlamydia trachomatis infection following an online campaign.
Introduction - Objectives - To increase the uptake of screening for Chlamydia trachomatis infection, INPES conducted a pilot program from September 3 to October 14, 2012, offering an online service for the delivery of a home self-collection kit. Materials and Methods - The kits, consisting of a 3-swab uriswab for men or a dry swab for women (Copan® Diagnostics), were mailed back to the CNR and analyzed on the cobas 4 800 (Roche® Diagnostics). Results - A total of 7,215 sexually active young people aged 18–24 living in mainland France were offered a kit. 3,372 (46.7%) accepted, and of these, 61.8% returned the kit to the CNR. Consequently, 2,084 self-collected samples were analyzed (1,299 from women; 785 from men). The prevalence was 6.8%, higher among women (8.3%) than among men (4.3%, p < 0.001). Among men, prevalence was highest among those who reported having multiple partners in the past year: 7.8% vs. 1.3% among those with a single partner (p = 0.001). A similar trend was observed among women (14.4% vs. 3.5%, p < 0.001). Among women, the number of partners in the past three months was also associated with a higher prevalence, ranging from 3.3% among those who had been abstinent to 15.3% among those with multiple partners (p < 0.001). Finally, the infection rate increases among those who did not use a condom during their last sexual encounter (5.2% vs. 9.5%, p = 0.01). Conclusion - These results show that the online offer of a home self-collection kit is well accepted by young people and makes it possible to reach a population with a high prevalence of C. trachomatis infection.
