COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for October 22, 2020

Key Points

  • Mainland France: sharp increase in all indicators, particularly hospitalizations, ICU admissions, and deaths

    • Increase in the number of people currently hospitalized (12,458 as of October 20) and in the number of people currently in intensive care (2,177).

    • Spread of the outbreak among older adults

    • Among those aged 65 and older: 6 times more cases, 5 times more hospitalizations, and 5 times more ICU admissions compared to early September

    • Increase in the number of cases in long-term care facilities

    • ICU admissions: 65% of those admitted to the ICU are aged 65 and older, and 90% have comorbidities

    • 89 departments at high vulnerability level and 8 at moderate vulnerability level

  • Overseas territories:

    • High vulnerability level: Martinique: continued increase; Guadeloupe: decrease; French Guiana: decrease

    • Moderate vulnerability level: Mayotte: stabilization; Réunion: stabilization

  • Prevention: physical distancing (maintain at least one meter between people; greet others without shaking hands or kissing), hygiene measures (wash hands regularly; cough into your elbow), limit gatherings, wear a mask, and regularly ventilate enclosed spaces. Isolate if symptoms develop and get tested as soon as possible.
