Survival Rates for People with Cancer in Metropolitan France, 1989–2018 - Soft Tissue Sarcoma

In mainland France, the number of new cases of soft tissue sarcoma was estimated at 2,701 in 2018, including 1,500 in men and 1,201 in women. Key points: A cancer with an intermediate prognosis, with a 5-year net survival rate of 59% for cases diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 (in both men and women); Decrease in 5-year net survival with increasing age at diagnosis: 74% at age 30 and 47% at age 80; Among younger individuals, survival is higher in women compared to men (at age 30: 80% versus 71%, respectively), but at older ages, survival is lower in women (50% for men aged 80 versus 44% for women); Improvement in net standardized survival at 1 and 5 years of follow-up between 1990 and 2015 (+11 and +19 percentage points, respectively), with an acceleration since 2010 and a more marked improvement among older individuals; Decrease in excess mortality between 1990 and 2015, primarily during the first five years of follow-up.
