Occupational health indicators. Work-related fatal accidents in France

The government sought to establish, at the national level, a set of indicators designed to track changes in the health of the French population. Since its creation in 1998, the Department of Occupational Health (DST) of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance (InVS) has focused on developing surveillance programs to regularly produce such data and thereby contribute to improving understanding of occupational risks. Data sources have expanded over time, and in 2009 the DST established a program for the regular production of indicators designed to provide a national overview of health issues related to the occupational environment, as well as their trends over time. These indicators are derived from various sources and will be published regularly on the InVS website (www.invs.sante.fr). This second issue focuses on work-related fatal accidents. In this document, readers will find data on mortality from workplace accidents and commuting accidents in France, broken down by major economic sectors and by the primary causes of accidents. Readers will also find information on the proportion of accidental deaths attributable to work and on the potential years of life lost as a result of these deaths. A separate chapter is devoted to work-related traffic accidents, the leading cause of fatal workplace accidents. Finally, a number of questions help put the presented results into perspective.
