The purpose of this report is to describe certain working conditions by occupational activity in France. It is based on data from the most recent Decennial Health Survey conducted in France in 2003 by INSEE and made available to the InVS. This national survey, conducted on a sample of 25,021 French households, aims to describe the population’s health status and healthcare utilization. In addition, for the first time, it includes questions on occupational exposures. The study population is limited here to individuals aged 18 or older who, at the time of the survey, were either employed, unemployed, or retired—provided they had previously been employed. In total, 16,984 people met these criteria. Employment is defined by occupation and economic sector, coded respectively using INSEE’s 1994 PCS classification (occupation and socio-professional category) and the 1993 NAF classification (French economic activity classification). The working conditions examined relate to atypical work schedules, time pressure, physical and psychosocial constraints, or other exposures classified as “miscellaneous” (age at first job, commute time). In addition, employment status (public-sector employee, private-sector employee, employee of one’s own company, or self-employed), the nature of employment for employees (apprentice or intern, temporary worker, fixed-term contract, permanent contract), as well as work hours (part-time or full-time) were described for the employed population. The results are presented in the form of tables with very brief commentary. The employment data collected in this survey are of interest because they provide an overall view of the period of professional activity, supplemented by more in-depth descriptions of certain parts of that period. These descriptions complement the results of two other national surveys, which focus exclusively on working conditions: the “Working Conditions” surveys of 1998 and 2005, and the 2003 Sumer survey, whose scope is significantly different.
