Health in Action, June 2013, No. 424: Promoting Health in Hospitals

A hospital is, above all, a place of care. But what about promoting the health of the patients who stay there? Indeed, beyond the provision of medical care, the World Health Organization’s (WHO) Ottawa Charter sets the framework for a shift in health services toward this new concept of “health promotion.” This is a real challenge, as it involves providing “people with the means to exercise greater control over their own health and to improve it.” The feature article explores concrete approaches to achieving this goal. Also in this issue: a segment on the prison system and a focus on health impact assessments.
