Emotional CPS Worksheet: Regulating Pleasant Emotions (E.2.2.a) and Unpleasant Emotions (E.2.2.b)

This fact sheet was written by Nadine Fréry and Béatrice Lamboy based on the Santé publique France CPS Reference Guide, Volume 2. It focuses on the second general emotional psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of a specific emotional psychosocial competency: Regulating pleasant (E.2.2.a) and unpleasant (E.2.2.b) emotions. This competency requires, on the one hand, the ability to modify the intensity and consequences of unpleasant emotions such as anger, sadness, and fear, so as not to be overwhelmed by them, and, on the other hand, the ability to pay attention to pleasant emotions such as joy, love, and enthusiasm. Regulating one’s emotions involves developing five areas of knowledge and skills: Knowing which emotional regulation strategies are effective and which are ineffective; Accepting and listening to one’s emotions and psychological needs (basic emotional strategy); Reinforcing one’s pleasant emotional experiences through effective strategies; In daily life, reducing unpleasant emotions through effective strategies; In crisis situations, managing unpleasant emotions through effective strategies. This specific skill can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, youth, and children.
