CPS Cognitive Worksheet: Understanding One’s Values, Psychological Needs, and Personal Goals (C1.3) and Making Constructive Decisions (C1.4)
This fact sheet was written by Béatrice Lamboy based on the CPS Volume 1 framework published by Santé publique France. It focuses on the first general cognitive psychosocial competency (CPS) and provides a summary of two specific cognitive psychosocial competencies: Understanding one’s values, psychological needs, and personal goals (C1.3) and Making constructive decisions (C1.4). Self-awareness involves having a better understanding of one’s goals and values. “The ability to make responsible choices requires being able to identify the goals that are important to oneself and to evaluate them in light of social norms, safety, ethics, and feasibility.” Understanding one’s personal values, psychological needs, and personal goals, and making constructive decisions involves developing three main areas of psychological knowledge and skills: Knowledge 1: Understanding aligned personal goals; Knowledge 2: Understanding the psychological needs required to choose aligned personal goals; Skill 3: Understanding one’s personal values to choose aligned personal goals. These two specific competencies can be applied during CPS activities. Thus, following a theoretical section, practical examples are presented for adults, youth, and children.
