Suicide: How to Talk About It? The Papageno Program.

Paradoxically, remaining silent about suicide hinders any possibility of prevention. The right words to discuss suicide or suicide attempts do exist, in the form of reporting that respects the person’s suffering. This is the exact opposite of highly publicized, “sensationalist” coverage that glamorizes suicide and details the method used, which can encourage copycat suicides. When reporting meets certain criteria, it can even help prevent suicidal behavior. Based on this scientifically established protective effect, the Papageno program aims to educate media and news professionals on the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO).
