Social perceptions of aging: changing perspectives.
Society often views old age with a rather unkind and pessimistic eye. Contrary to prevailing social perceptions, for most older adults, aging does not equate to disability. Researcher Stéphane Alvarez spoke with older adults to hear them discuss their “life journeys” and their views on old age. It becomes clear that old age and aging cannot be understood outside of their socio-environmental context. Giving older adults a voice so they can put their experiences of aging into words shows just how much aging varies by gender, social background, and many other factors. This is one way to provide a more comprehensive picture of old age, rather than viewing it solely through the lens of emerging disabilities.
