Self-esteem and risk-taking: what are we talking about?

This article examines the influence of healthy self-esteem on risk-taking by synthesizing the existing body of knowledge on the subject. The author clarifies the concept of self-esteem, explores its link to health behaviors, discusses the role of social conditions on self-esteem, and outlines recommended strategies to promote self-esteem among adolescents—particularly through support for parenting. The limitations and developments of the concept of self-esteem are examined in the conclusion.
