The Right to Abortion During a Health Crisis

Maud Gelly, a doctor at an abortion clinic, recounts—in the first person and speaking on behalf of the collective—how access to abortion, a fundamental right rooted in the most basic ethical principles—women’s rights, control over one’s own body, sexual rights, the right to self-determination, and free consent— access to healthcare—has been hindered to the detriment of women since mid-March during this pandemic. She highlights in particular the fact that the Covid-19 pandemic has brought to light women who are usually invisible—women who are forced to travel abroad to have an abortion, generally because their living conditions and the violence they have endured have led them to realize they were pregnant beyond the legal deadline for abortion in France. A powerful personal account.
