Promoting mental health: an individual, collective, and civic issue.

Mental health promotion is "a process aimed at strengthening the capacity of individuals and communities to take control of their lives and improve their mental health; it implements strategies that foster supportive environments and individual resilience." It targets all individuals and communities, particularly at-risk groups, as well as people with mental health conditions. Mutual support among peers (support groups, activities) is among the most promising initiatives. Home, school, work, and the community are the key settings for action. Inequalities related to gender, poverty, disability, unemployment, or social exclusion have a significant impact on mental health. Mental health promotion, a political act, primarily targets social determinants, which depend largely on public policy.
