The New Frontiers of Information: The Network of Networks (the Internet) and Public Health.

In Europe, the spread of infectious diseases—linked in particular to the growth of travel (global air travel, open borders)—poses a challenge for public health information. The use of new communication tools enables a shift from sequential access to the non-linear, controlled access offered by hypertext, which is distributed via the internet. The time saved in data processing facilitates the generation of indicators necessary, within the framework of epidemiological surveillance, for intervention decisions. This implies a change in practices in the field of epidemiology. It is no longer necessary to possess the information, but one must know where to find it and, above all, how to select it. The system ensures the confidentiality of the transmitted data.
