Mutual support can be an alternative to hospitalization. This is the conclusion reached by the Arlequin Mutual Support Group (GEM) in Lyon. GEM members no longer view themselves as patients, but as citizens coping with mental distress. While there are several hundred such groups in France, this one stands out for its integration into a genuine local network and its drop-in centers located in the homes of hospital patients.
