Media and Health: Developing Critical Thinking Skills: Learn More [Bibliography]
Our relationship with the media has been the subject of numerous writings: alternately portrayed as dangerous, manipulative, violent, civic-minded, educational, and empowering, the media is presented as a source of both the best and the worst. The issue of media literacy is therefore central to the topic of media and health: it refers to “the ability of individuals to obtain, understand, and use information in a way that promotes and maintains good health.” (World Health Organization (WHO). Health literacy. In: Glossary of Health Promotion. Geneva: WHO, 1998: p.11). After providing some general information on media literacy, we have selected references on media use, their influence on social norms, and health behaviors. Some references address the protection of minors from violence in the media and on the Internet, a topical issue that has been the subject of numerous writings. Finally, a selection of tools, educational websites, and organizations is provided.[article excerpt]
