Winner of the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival, *Entre les murs* (The Class), Laurent Cantet's film released in France in September 2008, sparked intense debate in educational circles. For Michel Condé, this film is of interest to all professionals involved in educational processes because it clearly illustrates the interactions—sometimes difficult—between teachers and students, in this case the teacher and the pupils. The film is conceived as an exploration of the role of teaching and the educational function of the teacher; it attempts to create a sense of distance, revealing what is at stake in this relationship by placing us in the position of an observer. This is precisely what the director sought to show: the interaction and the perspectives between these two worlds—that of the school institution and that of the students who are compelled to attend—as well as their respective roles; to make the complex reality palpable, including its missteps, starting from a single event—the expulsion of a student. For the author of the article, the film is an invitation to move beyond each person’s inevitably limited perspective by taking the “risk” of dialogue. Through examples, the false neutrality of the knowledge taught becomes apparent, and at times even its obsolescence—unconnected to the issues that interest the students—highlighting the gap between academic values, societal expectations, and the students’ own dispositions. "Entre les murs" goes beyond the debate over whether the film is a model or, on the contrary, a counter-model of pedagogy or of an inevitably illusory "pedagogism," since the necessary teaching tools to place the student at the center of the educational system are still lacking.
