Estimate of the number of adult women who have undergone female genital mutilation living in France
Today, 200 million women worldwide have undergone some form of female genital mutilation (FGM). While these practices have historically been more widespread on the African continent, they are now observed in other regions of the world, including European countries with significant immigrant populations. For example, in France in the mid-2000s, an initial indirect estimate suggested that approximately 60,000 adult women had undergone some form of FGM. The objective of this article is to update this estimate based on the latest available surveys and by incorporating risks observed in the context of migration for women born in France to parents from “at-risk countries” (the “second generation”). Using the extrapolation method, we estimate that in the early 2010s, approximately 125,000 "mutilated" adult women were living in France. This increase over the course of 10 years can be explained both by the feminization of the migrant population and by the aging of the "second generation." However, the inherent limitations of these indirect methods, which introduce estimation biases, should lead to the development of data collection tools that allow for direct and regular measurement of this practice in migrant contexts.
